Library Journal Review

Reduced from a more extensive German exhibition catalog, this publication is thin and summary in its text, offering a narrow slice of the intriguing Swiss artist Klee (1897-1940). The plates, with extended commentaries, provide the emotional connection with an artist who in much of his work attempted to capture the emotional mystical flux of the plant world. Included are several texts by Klee, a teacher as well as an artist, who offers his thoughts on the artist's relationship to the natural world. This book leaves unchallenged the assertion that there is no really satisfactory book on Klee for a general audience. Although the plate commentaries are very good, they are not recommendation enough to purchase this title.-- Jack Perry Brown, Art Inst. of Chicago Libs. (c) Copyright 2010.
