CHOICE Review

If a general reader needs to check something about Irish archaeology very quickly, Flanagan's book offers a handy place to begin. One word of caution, however, and one of praise. This dictionary is very expensive for what it contains. Many of the topical entries are extremely rudimentary, so brief as to be almost useless. On the other hand, the geographic entries are excellent. In fact, this work is much more like a gazetteer than a dictionary. Thus, if you seek a rapid survey of a particular site or area, this is a valuable guide. High school and public libraries will find the work more satisfying than scholarly or research libraries. On the whole, studies like Michael O'Kelly's Early Ireland (CH, Jan'90) and Nancy Edwards's The Archaeology of Early Medieval Ireland (CH, Apr'91) offer more. E. J. Kealey; College of the Holy Cross
