CHOICE Review

Current publications in art therapy voice concern about significant gaps or areas of apparent ambiguity between theories of psychodynamics and theories of creativity as they converge in the practice of art therapy. Two recent authors, Shaun McNiff (Educating The Creative Arts Therapist, 1986) and Arthur Robbins (The Artist as Therapist, 1987), address this concern as educators speaking to educators and professionals. In her work, Rubin directs attention to immediate needs of students and inexperienced therapists. She realizes the necessity for therapists at the very outset of practice to be clear about the continuity present within diverse classical theories of psychotherapy and psychodynamics, demonstrating this continuity through a collection of essays by art therapist-educators of national and international leadership. They define and apply to art therapy practice the basic tenets, goals, principles, and techniques of 14 classical theoretical bases. In a review of professional thought since 1972, Rubin illustrates noteworthy consistencies that have developed in art therapy theory. Her selective review of professional literature since the 1960s synthesizes multifaceted theories and techniques that easily can emerge as isolated or unrelated in training programs. A readable, comprehensive, and compactly organized major reference source-one long awaited by educators and students alike.-J.L. Leahy, Marygrove College
