Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Seeing what few others see, and capturing it for all of us, is the essence of Personal Exposures. For this volume Elliott painstakingly culled the work of a lifetime, rediscovering prints he had not seen in years and creating a unified whole that reflects a consistent, mature vision of photography and humanity. Here are men, women, and children in off-guard moments; old people; little girls hamming it up; and even various dogs, who have their own preoccupations. The pictures reflect a lifetime of humorous, ironic observation and sensitivity to the human condition.

Booklist Review

True humorists in photography can be counted on the fingers of . . . well, one or two fingers. The best is Elliott Erwitt, whose delightful pictures from the 1950s through the 1970s are collected-- at last!-- in a big, hefty, well-printed volume. ``Funny and sad, aren't they really the same thing?'' Erwitt asks in his introduction, and perhaps that's his secret. That, and incredible timing. Dogs, children, men, and women are caught in moments that make sophisticated visual puns-- and also make one happy to be alive. The eager art lovers gathered around an empty frame being watched slyly by a face in the adjoining painting; the hound staring at the camera with the identical expression of his master; the crane whose profile mimics the nearby water spigot-- these are just a few exam- ples of hundreds of moments of visual pleasure to be experienced here. Even libraries that own previous Erwitt books will want this excellent summary volume. -- Gretchen Garner
