Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

This undergraduate textbook has been written for students specializing in environmental science or ecology who require an introduction to the basic chemical concepts underlying a sound understanding of the subject. The aim throughout is to stress basic chemical principles, starting with atomic and molecular structure and leading to more advanced areas within physical, organic, inorganic, and analytical chemistry. Wherever possible, principles are illustrated with examples from environmental science and the final chapter provides case studies of environmental chemical processes. While the primary aim is to satisfy the needs of the nonchemist, it will also be useful to chemists who wish to apply their expertise to topics within environmental science.

Includes bibliographical references.

Introduction:a atomic and molecular structure (b)properties of matter -- Physical chemistry -- Chemistry of the elements -- Analytical chemistry -- Case studies.

CHOICE Review

At last, here is an easy-to-follow, thorough, and unintimidating text that embodies the principles of chemistry as applied to the environmental sciences. It provides an overview of atomic and molecular structure, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, some organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry, with an eye to the needs and interests of the environmental or geological scientist. The last chapter is filled with specific, thought-provoking case studies of different environmental systems. Each concept is presented clearly and concisely, and in a logical manner. The index and figures are informative; the bibliography is brief. A book wholly appropriate in an undergraduate library, filling a needed gap between introductory chemistry texts and applied volumes, and a useful reference when used in conjunction with more advanced treatises.-N. W. Hinman, University of Montana
