Booklist Review

Gr. 3^-6. These two titles in the Superguides series introduce each sport's history, rules, and basic movements in the publisher's signature balance of excellent color photos, text boxes, and white space. Each volume contains an introduction by a successful athlete (Chris Mullin in Basketball; Shannon Miller in Gymnastics); an extremely abbreviated history of the sport; tips on clothing and other suggestions for getting started; and an overview of the equipment and arena, such as Basketball's bird's-eye-view diagram of the court. Both books offer step-by-step instructions for the fundamental moves of the sport, and Gymnastics urges readers to seek a coach's assistance for more difficult moves. Each book closes with a page about professional competitions, a glossary, and useful addresses. Kids just beginning a sport will find the presentations' clear, basic instruction a useful supplement to actual training. Check the Series Roundup in this issue for other titles in the series. --Gillian Engberg

Horn Book Review

These books, formerly part of the Young Enthusiasts series, have been given new titles and jackets. Some have been updated; [cf2]Swimming[cf1], for instance, now includes an expanded glossary and a section on water safety. With their clear color photos against white backgrounds, lengthy captions, and numerous labels (often in tiny type), the books offer supplemental information for kids engaged in these sports.
