Painter Agnes Martin's quietly radiant geometric abstractions reflect her quest to capture moments of beauty or transcendence of ego and petty distractions. Her personal philosophy, as reflected in her semimystical writings, seems an amalgam of the Bible, Zen Buddhism, Taoism, William Blake and positive thinking. Featuring 60 color and 40 black-and-white plates, the volume profiles the Saskatchewan-born artist, now 80, who participated in the heyday of New York abstract expressionism and later settled in New Mexico. Whitney curator Haskell charts Martin's shifts from landscape to biomorphic abstractions to minimalism. Chave, a Hunter College art historian, looks at Martin's calm, grid-like compositions. Krauss, a professor at the City University of New York, endorses Martin's claim to be a classicist in the objective tradition of Egyptians, Greeks and Copts. A minimalist veteran of group shows and sales galleries, Martin (in her 80s) is being honored with some prestigious exhibitions, both here and abroad. This Whitney Museum retrospective catalog includes 70 paintings, constructions, and drawings from 1957 to 1990. A chronological essay by Whitney curator Haskell centers on the 1950s and 1960s. Shorter more formalist essays by art historians Anna Chave (Hunter College) and Rosalind Krauss (Columbia Univ.) exphasize Martin's activities since the 1960s, her film Gabriel, and her relationship with science and geometry. Includes excerpts of Martin's writings, a chronology, and an enormous listing of sales exhibitions, sales catalogs, and journal articles. Most art works have current locations, but even with superb photography, minimalist works suffer in reproduction. Other Martin catalogs tend to be dated (Agnes Martin, Institute of Contemporay Art, University of Pennsylvania, 1973) or foreign and somewhat inaccessible (Agnes Martin: Paintings and Drawings, 1974-1990, Stedelijk Museum, 1991.)
