There is some very good writing here--e.g., scenes and figures in Hopper's paintings are "forever subjected to the harsh light of the present." There are also many insights into meanings of the paintings along with the standard facts of Hopper's life. Schmied (art history, Academy of Fine Arts, Munich) views Hopper's "American" qualities as a products of this country in the 1920s and 1930s. Themes of loneliness, alienation, objectivity, and many influences from artistic, literary, and cultural sources are woven throughout a long essay of appreciation and understanding. Unfortunately, the 73 excellent color plates and many fine details are not shown to advantage in this small (8 3/4" x 6 3/4") book. Eleven plates have short commentaries. Black-and-white, postage-stamp-size reproductions of other artist's work provide somewhat forced comparisons. Selected bibliography in chronological order has 1980s and 1990s monographs, essays, and articles in German. Purchase this book for interpretations and for color plates with details, but Gail Levin's many books remain the best scholarly sources on Hopper. Undergraduate; general. W. L. Wieland Schmied is an art critic and essayist. He was director of the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover, where he organized the first big Hundertwasser retrospective in 1964, with an accompanying catalogue raisonne. From 1974 to 1975 he was chief curator at the Berliner Nationalgalerie, from 1978 to 1986 the director of the German Artist Exchange Program (DAAD), Berlin and afterwards director of the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. He is currently president of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, Munich.(Bowker Author Biography)
