CHOICE Review

An English edition of a German catalog, Andy Warhol: 1928-1987, published to accompany an exhibition at the KunstHausWien in Austria and locations in the US. It covers Warhol's work from his early years until his death. Included are 200 illustrations, most in color, and many good archival photographs. The works reproduced are drawn solely from two collections, the Jos'e Mugragi and Isle of Man collections, and are widely reproduced elsewhere. The book does illustrate for the first time a series of paintings for children that Warhol completed in the early 1980s. There are numerous quotes by the artist and reprints of a 1963 interview and the last interview granted before his death. The editor includes two short essays by Warhol biographers, a selected bibliography, and brief summaries of some of the artist's more important films. This work is a coffee-table book with many good reproductions, but little of interest to a researcher or student. Recommended: Kynaston McShine's Andy Warhol: A Retrospective (CH, Jul'89), Carter Ratcliff's Andy Warhol (CH, Apr'84), or David Bourdon's Warhol (CH, Feb'90). R. J. Merrill; University of Southern California
