CHOICE Review

Rothstein writes for both the beginner and the advanced reader. However, although this book contains a great deal of well-written introductory information, a student reading about MIDI for the first time will need to use a good audio/MIDI dictionary or glossary, possibly Bo Tomlyn's Electronic Music Dictionary (1988). Unfortunately no glossary is included in Rothstein's volume. Readers seeking advanced information will not be disappointed. Rothstein has included information and explanations about nearly everything concerning MIDI in well-written prose that is easily read providing that the reader understands all the terms used by the author. All readers will benefit from the chapters covering how to choose MIDI hardware and software. There is also excellent material concerned with getting help from retail stores and with publications and most useful on-line bulletin boards and user groups. Recommended to all libraries as a topic of interest to the general reader as well as to the musician or computer buff. D. Hibbard; McLennan Community College
