Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

This comprehensive treatment of geotechnical engineering utilizes the S.I. System of Units to discuss and analyze soil mechanics and foundation engineering. Part One discusses the composition of soil terminology, compressibility and consolidation of soils and other technical properties and uses of soils. Part Two covers structures, pressures, stability, bearing capacity and foundations with reference to soil mechanics. Reference is made to relevant Indian Standards as well as to MKS Units. Each chapter includes large numbers of both practice and illustrative problems and questions with answers.

Includes bibliographical references and indexes.

CHOICE Review

Venkatramaiah writes for students preparing to take examination in geotechnical engineering as given in engineering colleges in India. The topics that are generally included in soil mechanics and some of the aspects of foundation engineering are treated in a comprehensive manner. At the end of each chapter several example problems, a summary of the chapter, and many practice problems (most of which are derived from the university examinations given at the author's home institution) are provided. Both the SI and MKS systems of units are used, but the conventional US (English) units are not included. Frequently, appropriate Indian standards are given where applicable. Subject and author indexes are provided. Useful to junior and senior undergraduates and pre-professional students in traditional civil engineering curricula. R. P. Khera; New Jersey Institute of Technology
