This study of British films and filmmaking from 1959 to 1970 began as a PhD thesis, but the transformation seems to be complete. Much of the treatment of individual films--and standards of evaluation--are highly individual if not downright idiosyncratic, however the author is very forthright about his choices and reasoning, so the reader can usually gather information while by-passing critical judgment. This is not a book about individual directors or about leading actors (except in comedy). Its main categories are kitchen-sink films, swinging London films, horror, crime, and comedy. There is an unsatisfactory chapter on ^D["art^D]" films and a very biased chapter on Hollywood's British films, grouped by studios. The chapters on British film criticism and the British film industry are very good. Most important, however, is that, in spite of flaws, this is an immensely readable book and covers as completely as possible in a short space an important but much neglected period of British film. It is valuable for undergraduate libraries for its breadth and jargon-free writing clarity and for graduate schools for its coverage of little-known films by important directors. The introduction and bibliography are excellent.
