Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Deals with the current application of physical and engineering properties of soils and the theories of soil mechanics to the design and construction of foundations, deep excavations and dams, and to the stability of natural and excavated slopes.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 682-702) and indexes.

CHOICE Review

Two previous editions were published since Terzaghi's death; now a very distinguished third author has been added. As in earlier editions, this book maintains its previous format with three distinct parts: "Physical Properties of Soils"; "Theoretical Soil Mechanics"; and "Problems of Design and Construction." Part 1 has been expanded with considerable new material on shear strength and compressibility. Most of the chapters end with a list of reading material. Though there are no example problems in the book per se, occasionally some practice problems and their answers are provided, using SI units. Many practical problems with extensive discussions and recommendations for dealing with various types of field and site conditions in foundation design and construction and earthwork form the core of part 3. Such a collection of realistic problems is not readily available elsewhere. An excellent book for practicing engineers, faculty, and graduate students. R. P. Khera New Jersey Institute of Technology
