CHOICE Review

This volume serves both as a catalog of a 1988/89 exhibition of Johns's work and as a reference that will be of value beyond the dates of the original exhibitions. The Rosenthal (Philadelphia Museum of Art) text is authoritative and insightful. He captures the intensely personal and enigmatic spirit of Johns's work in the past decade and a half, as the artist moved first away from his earlier object-oriented style to a series of paintings characterized by crosshatched lines used almost as a visual stimulus, and then (after 1982) to a group of paintings in which the image reappears. Johns--whose works have brought the highest prices of any living artist at recent auctions--certainly deserves the attention focused on him by exhibitions and publications such as this. Rosenthal's expertise and insight is highly evident; in his thorough research and judicious references to what other historians and critics have written, the essays here provide points of view reflecting the diversity and multiple interpretations of Johns's recent painting. The author provides a thorough analysis of a number of individual works of art, but he never loses sight of his central concern: to reflect the richness and diversity of this enigmatic and complex artist.
