CHOICE Review

Weeks is a British scholar who has tackled the field of sexuality-its history, theory, and politics. This is his third book in the area (Coming Out, 1977, Sex, Politics and Society, CH, May '82). With great learning and calm judgment, Weeks assesses the way sexuality has been thought of and written about by lay and professional figures over the past century. From his own position of ``radical pluralism'' Weeks lays bare the underlying assumptions, modes of expression, and political implications of writings as diverse as scientific-sex research, psychoanalysis, lesbian feminism, and the advocacy of rights for sadomasochists and pedofiliacs. Whatever the form of expression of sexuality, Weeks never falls in the easy redirectionisms prevalent in the field. No serious student of sexuality can afford to miss this book. For anyone who wants to go beyond Michel Foucault's History of Sexuality (v.1, CH, Feb '79), this book is a must. Recommended for upper-division undergraduate students and up.-N.W. Bell, University of Toronto
