CHOICE Review

A significant contribution to social psychology, this volume confirms the renewed interest in the relationship(s) between self and identity. Tesser, Felson, and Suls have assembled premier researchers in the area to provide cutting-edge explorations on "self" and its implications, e.g., the human capacity for self-reflection and the many implications of self-esteem level. Providing an appropriate balance between theory and application, each of the chapters presents information that is informative and relevant. Particularly good are Penelope Lockwood and Ziva Kunda's essay "Outstanding Role Models," Sandra L. Murray and John G. Holmes's "Seeing Self through a Partner's Eyes," and Roy Baumeister's strong case for revisiting self-research to reexamine an "energy model of self" (an approach that has been abandoned). Recommended for upper-division undergraduates and above, this book should be required reading for any psychology course treating the concept of "self." One cannot help but learn about self and others in reading it. R. E. Osborne; Indiana University East
