CHOICE Review

Pascall offers a sophisticated but not complete analysis of the process by which social policy is developed. Particular emphasis is placed upon the role (or nonrole) of women in this arena. The author reviews sources of sexist bias in traditional policy analysis. These sources include lack of appreciation of the domestic/private sector, linguistic bias, sexist assumptions underpinning traditional social policy priorities, and a general tendency to marginalize women. These factors are illustrated and explored in the areas of family, work, education, housing, and health. The analysis presented is intricate, and assumes prior training in or a predisposition to feminist criticism. The book therefore is suggested for upper-level undergraduates and above.-M. Triplette, Salem College, N.C.
