CHOICE Review

A fascinating, eclectic group of articles well worth adding to collections in sociology, psychology, history, health studies, gender studies, sexuality, or lesbian and gay studies. The introduction by Gagnon and Parker is a concise and useful summary of the last 15 years of theorizing about sexuality. It sets the stage for the selection of empirical and theoretical essays that contribute to understanding the social construction of sexuality. The essays are organized around five areas of inquiry: histories of desire; gender, sexuality, and identity; gender power; social and sexual networks; and the social construction of sexual risk. Essays cover a wide range of topics, from a discussion of "silences in research on the history of sexuality" (Lutzen), to patterns of sexual behavior and their implications for sexually transmitted diseases in Nigeria (Orubuloye). Although the majority of contributors are from English-speaking countries, the research and theorizing includes and draws from researchers from around the world, and authors include such internationally respected theorists as Jeffrey Weeks, Gilbert Herdt, and Dennis Altman. The collection should be included an all research libraries. Upper-division undergraduates and above. J. A. Brown; Connecticut State University
