Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Modern biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field which deals with the practical use of microbial, plant or animal cells to produce goods or perform services for industry, trade and commerce. It is a symbiotic integration of aspects of several subjects whose literature is presently scattered among many specialist publications. Written and organized by the world's foremost biotechnology experts, this publication is be the most authoritative work of its kind. It provides information essential to researchers and students in academic, industrial and government institutions. It is also indispensable to personnel in manufacturing and service industries, particularly those involved with pharmaceuticals, foods and beverages, fuels, chemicals, waste treatment, agriculture, mining and medicine.

CHOICE Review

A fine addition to Pergamon Press's series of Comprehensive ... titles. The aim was to cover the breadth of knowledge about biotechnology in the smallest space and in as timely a manner as possible; the results are a success. The four-volume set is coherently arranged and well indexed, and the scientific and engineering credentials of the writers and editors are excellent. Bibliographies cite work done through 1982, and in many cases the introductions to each section update the work through 1984. The quality of the writing is uneven, but that is unavoidable in a work of this size. The set is easy to use; each volume contains an index to the full set, a glossary, and the contents of the other volumes. The subject coverage is comprehensive. Volume 1 begins with the scientific principles upon which the discipline is based and Volume 2 expands upon this by covering engineering fundamentals of equipment and process design. Volume 3 describes present specific applications of these fundamentals and Volume 4 continues with anticipated future applications. One unusual feature of Volume 4 is the section on government regulations and patent requirements, highlighting the groundbreaking nature of this discipline. Highly recommended for comprehensive graduate collections in biology and essential for any biotechnology collection. For small colleges and large public libraries, this reviewer would choose this set rather than the more slowly appearing Biotechnology (1981-) by VCH Pubs.-N.J. Bird, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
