CHOICE Review

This is the fourth handbook in five years on the design of industrially printed textiles. Basically following the format of earlier books, such as Carol Joyce's Designing for Printed Textiles (1982) and Terry Gentille's Printed Textiles (1982), Fisher and Wolfthal (Fashion Institute of Technology) cover many aspects of the print designer's profession. Seeing the trade with its changing trends as the directive force in design, the authors first describe the different product areas and their markets, explaining and illustrating in detail the tools, supplies, and techniques used as well as the production methods and their effect on the format of the work. Special attention is given to color-considered the most important element in print design. Discussion of the presentation of the work, interviewing for a job, different modes of working in the field, and selling the work give the beginning designer further security. There is a list of suggested projects to encourage a student in collecting a portfolio, a glossary of professional terms, an extensive bibliography, lists of professional and trade associations and of sources for supplies. Drawings illustrate technical matters and black-and-white and color photographs give examples of work by contemporary designers. The reader may still feel a need for a book addressing the issue of what makes a good print design, but as a technical handbook, this book offers a great deal for a novice.-M. Tulokas, Rhode Island School of Design

Booklist Review

Fisher and Wolfthal present a comprehensive guide for the novice seeking a career in textile print design. Well-written and profusely illustrated chapters detail the necessary supplies and tools, discuss concepts such as balance, texture, and scale (presented with informative diagrams), and describe pertinent production considerations, business practices, marketing methods, and free-lance opportunities. Exercises designed to improve learned skills (e.g., painting color wheels, sketching from nature) are included, with creativity and experimentation stressed throughout. Appended: glossary, bibliography, sources, index. JMM. 746.6'2 Textile design / Textile printing [OCLC] 86-80236
