Booklist Review

Batik has evolved from the 1960s perception of it as strictly a hippie adornment to a very sophisticated art form. Dyrenforth chronicles that change, tracing the craft from its roots in the Orient and Africa to its modern reincarnation. The text, which focuses on six projects, is hampered somewhat by the lack of color; the black-and-white photographs are, however, clear and instructive. Profiles of seven contemporary artists complete the book and further substantiate the author's idea that batik is a fabric art for all times.
