Publishers Weekly Review

In a delightful and thorough investigation, London's Victoria and Albert Museum staffer Parry recalls the artistic genesis and glory of the Arts and Crafts movement's fabricmakers and their work. The author outlines the history of late 19th century England's textile industry, and shares her understanding of the atmosphere that gave rise to the Arts and Crafts Society 100 years ago. Like the patterns illustrated here, Parry spares no detail in tracing the artists whose work is associated with the movement. While, happily, many lesser-known designers are covered, lengthy analysis is given to C.F.A. Voysey, Lindsay Butterfield and George Haite, whose styles characterize the period. Research dazzles as the Society's exhibitions are recapped and their artistic importance discussed. In a nice touch, we see period photographs of the products in Victorian homes and learn how the public received them. Throughout, Parry displays consummate critical skills while leavening her discourse with enthusiastic appreciation of the fabrics and prints that decorated the Victorian world and now adorn these pages in 50 color plates. Booklist Review

Here are two new, well-illustrated studies of the Arts and Crafts movement on both sides of the Atlantic at the turn of the century. Parry's book examines the textile designs that played an important role in the English Arts and Crafts style during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Both handmade and manufactured examples are presented, as Parry examines the designs, techniques, and aesthetic principles at work. The first section of the book portrays the evolution of the style and records developments through examples shown at the exhibitions held by the Society of Designers and other groups. The second section is an alphabetical annotated catalog of designers, manufacturers, and shops. Numerous excellent color illustrations and period black-and-white photographs accompany the text. Notes, bibliography; index. Volpe and Cathers are important American dealers in American Arts and Crafts items, and their approach as collectors emphasizes the individual work of well-known architects and designers of the period. While the authors do not give a particularly thorough or comprehensive history of the movement itself, they manage to highlight some of the most beautiful and significant objects produced under its name. Chapters on furniture, ceramics, metal work, glass, and other products discuss these items and their creators, while a series of color illustrations captures the individual beauty of the pieces without always relating their significance to either an entire room setting or the style as a whole. Bibliography; index. JB.
