Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Christian Dior's Spring Collection of February 1947 startled the fashion world, but resulted in the new look becoming the symbol for a wider range of developments in which a generation of designers revitalized the basic forms of home and workplace. Carlo Mollino and Gio Ponti in Italy, Stig Lindberg, Tapio Wirkkala and Henning Koppel in Scandinavia, Robin and Lucienne Day in Britain and Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen in America made rapid and radical changes and created a new look for the applied arts. The visual strength of their designs is reflected in their continued popularity.

This book was originally published on the occasion of the exhibition "The New Look - Design in the Fifties" organized by Manchester City Art Galleries, shown at Manchester from 13th October 1991 - 5th January 1992 and at Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum from 31st January - 5th April 1992..

CHOICE Review

This is a cut-and-dried review of product and decorative design of the 1950s, with a particularly British slant on the subject. Jackson, Assistant Keeper of Decorative Art at Manchester City Art Galleries, has coined the term "The New Look" to define the style of design emanating from Europe and America after WW II. Her book chronicles the role of artists, fashion designers and technology in the development of The New Look, which replaced the more functionally oriented Modern Movement. Noticeably absent from this study are graphic design and appliance design. This is unfortunate, as Jackson places too much emphasis on glass, ceramic, and furniture. To her credit, the author covers trends in Scandinavia and Italy, countries often overlooked in studies on this period in design history. The book's design and layout are stiff and unappealing, giving what was a very whimsical era a feeling of sobriety. Level: graduate students.-J.
