CHOICE Review

This book is one of thorough, almost aggressive, scholarship. The author states in the introduction that he wishes to correct the "myriad of inaccuracies" in the most recent biography of the composer, James Harding's Saint-Saens and His Circle (London, 1965), and to ameliorate the, in his opinion, disastrous effect Harding's work has had on current perceptions of Saint-Saens. Stegemann informs the reader of all aspects of the concertos and concertante works of Saint-Saens in meticulous detail, replete with charts of musical forms of individual works and copious musical examples. The appendixes contain a complete thematic list of Saint-Saens' concertante works, with documentation of sources. In addition, the author provides a list of French solo concertos and concertante works from 1850 to 1920 (essentially the years of Saint-Saens' productive life), 21 pages of footnotes to the text, and an extensive bibliography. A very important work for all scholars interested in the music of the 19th century. Upper-division undergraduate and graduate collections. -W. Ross, University of Virginia
