CHOICE Review

The four titles listed here have been extracted without change from McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, fifth edition (CH, May'94). Each runs about 500 pages in length and has a generous vocabulary (for earth science, more than 10,000 terms; bioscience, more than 17,000; chemistry, more than 8,000; and physics, more than 9,000, all publisher's estimates). The illustrations that were an important feature of the basic dictionary have been dropped. Each title also has appendixes of conversion factors and other tables of importance to the topic (e.g., for geology, classes of igneous rocks; for physics, crystal lattice diagrams). Although these subject dictionaries may have utility in special collections, most libraries will prefer the parent dictionary, especially since it costs little more than their combined prices; those that own it need not bother with these.
