CHOICE Review

This well-written, practical handbook for readers with scientific backgrounds provides practical advice for those who are involved in communicating scientific information to a variety of listeners including the general public. The authors do a credible although abbreviated job of covering writing, speaking, and the media. Both have science backgrounds, regularly teach courses involving science communications, and are practitioners of the art. Through a variety of examples they illustrate salient points and make frequent use of advice from scientists, journalists, and broadcasters. There are an excellent index, additional sources and readings, and a helpful list of addresses of organizations promoting science communication. Readers will find the listing of additional sources very helpful. The Handbook will also be valuable to those science students taking a course in practical communication. A welcome addition to an area that has previously received little attention; highly recommended as an addition to college and university libraries as well as to the personal libraries of practicing scientists and engineers.-D. A. Johnson, Spring Arbor College
