Booklist Review

Like the other volumes in the growing series drawn from The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, including The New Grove High Renaissance Masters (Booklist 81:1093 Ap 1 85), this book focuses on a group of composers united by nationality and/or period. The current renewal of interest in French music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries has brought back to public attention the compositions of Lully, Charpentier, Lalande, Couperin, and Rameau, particularly through production of the dramatic works of Lully and Rameau on the modern stage. The expert contributors to this volume consider both stage music for opera and ballet as well as sacred music for instrumental ensembles and solos. As they review each composer's career and compositions, the authors present a thorough record and analysis of the musical traditions of the period as well as criticism and interpretations of these prominent individual composers. Lists of works and bibliographies for each composer; index. JB. 780 Composers France / Music France 17th century History and criticism / Music France 18th century History and criticism [OCLC]
