CHOICE Review

The Duke of Devonshire's collection of drawings at Chatsworth is one of the greatest still in private hands. This extremely handsome volume is the catalog that accompanied a selection of 100 sheets that were exhibited at the National Gallery of Art and the Pierpont Morgan Library in 1995-96. A brief introduction provides a history of the Devonshire collection; then follow the catalog entries, which are arranged chronologically by national schools. Every drawing is reproduced in excellent, large color plates on heavy stock paper. Provenance, previous literature, and expert commentary on each sheet are provided by Michael Jaffe, director emeritus of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and one of the world's premier scholars of drawings. Jaffe advances some new attributions and incorporates the latest research on the collection. Thus, this sumptuously produced volume is both visually appealing and an important scholarly contribution. It amply attests changes in catalog publishing--especially for drawing exhibitions--since 1969-70, when a different selection of the Chatsworth riches toured the US and was accompanied by an excellent catalog, but with only black-and-white illustrations (James Byam Shaw, Old Master Drawings from Chatsworth, London, 1969).
