CHOICE Review

The bibliography of the popular sculptor Henry Moore, who died in 1986 at the age of 88, is naturally very large and varied, but this new addition to it, although with some reservation, can be recommended. Since it is the catalog for an exhibition held at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1988, it is restricted to works available for display, but it does amply represent all periods of Moore's career with a catalog of 128 drawings and 111 sculptures and maquettes (the large public works are discussed separately). There is also the requisite chronology of the artist's life. All works are illustrated. The book's major failing is the inclusion of three short and not very original or informative essays by different authors instead of a deeper, sorely needed new look at Moore's work. The complete catalog by Herbert Read, Henry Moore: Sculpture and Drawings (1944), and its sequel Henry Moore: Complete Sculpture, ed. by D. Sylvester (1988), remain the definitive study. -J. Howett, Emory University
