Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

The emphasis of this book is very much on modern automotive electronics and it concentrates on technology in production from the late 1980s on. It is assumed that the reader has little or no prior knowledge of electrical or electronic engineering. The text takes the reader from the basics through to the most recently developed systems. Although they may do very different jobs, all sophisticated automobile electronic control systems work in fundamentally the same way and comprise a microcomputer system that communicates with the outside world via various sensors and actuators.

Includes index.

Introduction -- Electrical and electronic principles -- The automobile electrical system -- Microprocessor systems and control strategies -- Engine management systems -- Electronic transmission control -- Electronic control of chassis systems -- Body electronic systems -- Reliability and fault diagnosis.

CHOICE Review

Chowanietz discusses the use of electrical electronics and microprocessor technologies in the operation, control, and management of various automobile parts such as the engine, transmission, chassis, emission control system, and so forth. He begins with basic electricity principles, circuit elements, circuits, transistors, integrated circuits, operational amplifiers, and other devices, and follows with a discussion of the complete automobile electrical system including the construction and operation of batteries, alternators, and motors. Subsequent chapters treat microprocessors and control systems with applications to engine management and performance, emission controls, transmission and chassis control, body electronics, and finally, fault analysis and diagnosis. An excellent and easy-to-follow discussion of the electrical and electronics systems in the operation of automobiles, with numerous diagrams and illustrations. Very useful for engineers, technicians, students, or mechanics who need a comprehensive understanding of the electronically controlled and operated automobiles of today. Undergraduates through professionals; two-year technical program students. K. K. Surti University of New Haven
