CHOICE Review

Sudjic, a critic for The Sunday Times, writes of three British architects who can be identified loosely as high-tech designers because of the mechanistic nature of their work. In weaving each of these individuals through nine short chapters dealing with subjects such as their training, office practices, attitudes toward modernism, and their approaches to planning and spatial design, Sudjic achieves mixed results. His discussions of context and ideas are generally good, but the ideas and works of Rogers and Foster run together somewhat, and this reader wished for more depth, especially on James Stirling. Moreover, Sudjic champions this work without reservation, never considering that it might appear painfully idiosyncratic in a few decades. Nevertheless, the book assembles the masters of an interesting genre; it is well illustrated in both color and black-and-white photographs and it concludes with a useful list of buildings and projects by each architect. Level: upper-division undergraduate and graduate.-J. Quinan, SUNY at Buffalo
