CHOICE Review

Following a thoughtful, informative introduction by Asa Briggs, Volume 7 offers 11 authoritative essays on different aspects of the arts in late Victorian Britain. The central topics--architecture, literature, fine arts, music, and design/crafts--are given significant space and serious, integrated treatment; the overall picture of the artistic scene is supplemented by shorter essays on such specific, illustrative topics as clowns or public parks. For the specialist, some chapters will seem frustratingly condensed or even wrong-headed. But the volume taken as a whole is an extremely helpful synthesis of the arts of this period in relation to each other and to the society that produced them. Especially valuable are the clearly organized bibliographic essay and the very thorough index. Academic and public libraries. -M. M. Garland, The Ohio State University
