CHOICE Review
Smyer and Qualls provide mental health professionals and students with the information needed to work with older adults. The authors discuss theoretical models of mental health and clinical applications related to four major areas: 1) aging process, e.g., normal and pathological aging; 2) mental health, e.g., Erikson's developmental tasks; 3) assessment and treatment for mental illnesses most common in older adults, e.g., stabilization and reduction of alcohol abuse; and 4) contexts of mental health practice, e.g., nursing homes, public policy, and insurance. Nursing homes have replaced state mental hospitals as the residence for mentally ill older adults. Suggestions are offered to the practitioner on consulting and team participation in that situation, with limited funding and staffed mainly by aides. Extensive references and documentation; author index of researchers contributing to the text or to the variety of tables and figures. This work addresses an important issue in our society.
