Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Elasticity, plasticity, damage mechanics and cracking are all phenomena which determine the resistance of solids to deformation and fracture. The authors of this book discuss a modern method of mathematically modelling the behaviour of macroscopic volume elements. The book is self-contained and the first three chapters review physical mechanisms at the microstructural level, thermodynamics of irreversible processes, mechanics of continuous media, and the classification of the behaviour of solids. The rest of the book is devoted to the modelling of different types of material behaviour. In each case the authors present characteristic data for numerous materials, and discuss the physics underlying the phenomena together with methods for the numerical analysis of the resulting equations.

CHOICE Review

This English edition, well translated from the original French publication by two well-qualified authors, gives a comprehensive treatment of the subject of deformation and fracture of different types of solids that are under the influence of mechanical and thermal effects. This is a unique publication in the sense that it gives unified treatment of the subject matter, covering both microscopic and macroscopic aspects of material behavior as well as kinematic and phenomenological modeling of different types of solids. The eight well-written chapters consider all the essential topics--physical mechanisms of deformation and failure; virtual work representation of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics of irreversible processes; mechanical properties of solids; elasticity; plasticity, viscoplasticity; damage mechanics; and fracture mechanics. Each chapter is, more or less, self-contained and can be read independently of others. The text is easy to read, illustrations are excellent, subject index is comprehensive, and list of notations is complete. No author index; chapter-end bibliographies are too short. This is an excellent book for those needing a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical and thermal behavior of solids. It can also be used as a textbook in a graduate-level course. A valuable addition to college science and engineering libraries. -P. K. Basu, Vanderbilt University
