Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

The book gives a comprehensive coverage of ICs and can be divided into three parts. The first deals with processing, component formation, and device modelling. The second part covers digital and analogue circuits, including semicondutor memories, with performance summaries of commercial products. The final part explains the nature of application specific integrated circuits ( ASICs), and the ASIC design process. The final chapter covers VLSI scaling and the dominant role of interconnections in the scaling process. The text caters for many enginers and scientists who need to have a grasp of IC capabilities and ASIC design rooted in an appreciation of processing, device, behaviour, and circuit practice.

CHOICE Review

Herbst presents a comprehensive treatment of electronic integrated circuits, including fabrication techniques, semiconductor processing, electronic circuit design, and application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) design techniques. He offers an overview and historical perspective relating to the evolution of modern integrated circuits, beginning with the inventions of bipolar and field-effect transistors, to the development of very large scale integrated circuits (VLSI). Included are integrated circuit fabrication, semiconductor processing, packaging, semiconductor device modeling (including the role of computer-aided analysis programs such as SPICE), electronic circuit design including digital circuits (logic gates), analog circuits (operational amplifiers, filters, comparators, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters), and semiconductor memories (RAM and ROM); a final section provides an extensive treatment of ASICs, including design methodology and computer-aided design and engineering tools using hardware descriptive languages. The text is well written and supported with an extensive glossary. Herbst assumes a basic background in transistor operation, electronic circuit design, and digital design. Recommended for libraries associated with academic programs in electrical and computer engineering. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. F. A. Cassara Polytechnic University
