CHOICE Review

An important addition to college library collections. Although other books on art therapy are available, such as the author's Clinical Art Therapy (CH, Sep '81) and H. Wadeson's The Dynamics of Art Psychotherapy (CH, Dec '87), this is the first book to describe art therapy as a family activity. Theoretically this is a valuable insight because it expands our understanding of the individual within a social context and extends the therapeutic benefits to the group. Landgarten (Loyola Marymount University) describes the use of family art psychotherapy in conjunction with family therapy and provides standardized evaluation techniques. The seven case histories are supplemented with illustrations drawn by various family members during treatment. These illustrations speak eloquently about the different perspectives family members have of the same problem situation. This book is a valuable aid to mental health specialists because it provides a new tool and a new perspective on family dynamics. However, it is also recommended for community college and university students.-F. Smolucha, Moraine Valley Community College
