CHOICE Review

Everitt (Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College, London) provides the reader with a broad overview of the concepts of probability and chance throughout history, as they relate to health, education, business, marriage, and travel. Chapters are interwoven with some history of probability and statistics as well as some simple examples or problems. The author has "boxed off" any mathematical material that is primarily arithmetic in order that the reader not be distracted from the narrative. This book is very informal in its content and covers topics such as lotteries, roulette, cards, horse racing, coincidences, and birthdays. Cartoons with a British flavor and historical pictures are displayed throughout the book. Recommended for general readers. D. J. Gougeon; University of Scranton
