CHOICE Review

This very thorough work, in a new edition (3rd ed., CH, Feb'96), is targeted to readers at the graduate or research level. It should be noted that Modern Practices is more than simply a compilation of accepted practices. It begins with a historical development chapter that allows the reader to appreciate gas chromatography as a craft that has evolved over time. It also includes several detailed chapters on the instrumental designs in modern use including detector schematics and electronic wiring diagrams, column design, coatings and packing materials, and interfaces for use with a mass spectrometer, as well as systems for handling gas samples. In addition to being a very thorough instrumental work, this book also covers modern applications of GC in numerous disciplines such as forensics, physiochemistry, pharmaceuticals, environmental chemistry, and petrochemistry. Quality assessment/quality control and best practices of sample preparation are also discussed. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Graduate students through professionals. R. M.
