CHOICE Review

It is not clear why A Handbook of Communication Skills is so titled. This is much more of an ``all about it'' text than a ``how to do it'' handbook. As such, this edited collection contains some excellent literature reviews written by British and American researchers, mostly form the field of psychology. The book consists of five separate sections. Part 1 seeks to provide a theoretical framework for the examination of communication as a social skill. Part 2 presents research findings pertaining to what are considered to be eight core communication skills (nonverbal communication, questioning, reinforcement, reflecting, opening and closing, explaining, self-disclosure, and listening). Part 3 focuses on group leadership and on negotiating and bargaining skills. Part 4 deals with humor, emotion, confrontation, and empathy. The fifth section presents a brief conclusion and overview. This reference book would most likely be used by graduate students and advanced undergraduates in social sciences in order to acquire information about international research pertaining to various forms of interpersonal communication. By and large, the best most recent research has been cited.-S.A. Rollman, James Madison University
