CHOICE Review

The first introductory engineering book in nearly 20 years that gives an overview of internal combustion engines. Stone provides background that students require to understand many engineering articles, papers, and advanced textbooks. He draws together engineering disciplines that include thermodynamics, combustion, fluid mechanics, heat transfer mechanics, stress analysis, material science, and computing as they apply to internal combustion engines. Stone covers recent applications of gasoline fuel injection, computer engine controls, and turbocharging, and he describes current compression ignition engine combustion chambers and injection systems. The last chapter gives case studies of the development of three modern engines. The complete reference list of engineering books and papers will help the reader locate additional information on each subject covered. Recommended for libraries that serve mechanical engineering students.-H.E. Ellinger, formerly Western Michigan University
