Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

A text which aims to help undergraduate students in geology to recognize and interpret metamorphic textures and microstructures in thin-section. For lecturers and postgraduates in geology and petrology, the book provides reference for the interpretation of metamorphic rocks.

CHOICE Review

This slim but authoritative volume is an attempt to update previous books on the subject by providing a "well-illustrated and comprehensive" guide to the modern literature. It complements, but does not supersede, such excellent older texts as R.H. Vernon's Metamorphic Processes (CH, Jun'76) or A.H. Spry's Metamorphic Textures (1969). It is written in an abbreviated, almost synoptic, style that is clear enough but leaves this reviewer wishing for a more thorough explanation of the modern thinking on many of the topics Barker merely touches on. One pleasing feature is the inclusion of eight color photomicrographs of various types of rock textures. However, there are many similar black-and-white photographs scattered thoroughout that are so poorly reproduced as to be of only limited use. Excellent line drawings and a most welcome glossary of technical terms. By and large, the book would be a useful addition to academic libraries serving undergraduate degree-granting geology departments. -C. J. Casella, Northern Illinois University
