CHOICE Review

This book combines a special sensitivity to the developmental experiences of young children with an acute cultural awareness of the multifarious experience of immigration. The result is an insightful and comprehensive analysis that adds much to readers' understanding of both immigration and early childhood development, even as it draws their focus to the intersection of these two critical human concerns. Adopting a wide variety of disciplinary lenses (historical, sociological, pedagogical, psychological), the authors make judicious use of existing research, the National Association for the Education of Young Children's standards, and quantitative data in support of their well-grounded perspective. What makes this work particularly unique is how the authors enliven the text with personal immigration stories, told by and about young children, to frame and inform their analysis and advocacy. There is a clear and authentic human voice that colors this academic research. The chapters are organized as instructional text, and each one has sections that clearly delineate its learning objectives, a summation of key ideas, and continuing opportunities "to think, do, and reflect." It will be valuable for courses in early childhood education and development, as well as in related courses across the social sciences. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels. --Timothy Richard Glander, Nazareth College
