CHOICE Review

Feldman (a renowned insight meditation teacher) and Kuyken (Univ. of Oxford, UK; director, Oxford Mindfulness Centre) have cowritten what is the finest contribution to date to the ever-growing literature on mindfulness and its implications for creating and living a life less hampered by suffering and distress. The authors approach human distress and suffering from two compatible angles, that of Western psychological science and that of Buddhist psychology. With this dual lens, they elucidate a vision that brings the Western and Eastern perspectives together in order to offer practical guides to how mindfulness training can help people alleviate suffering and contribute to their flourishing. The most original chapter is "Ethics and Integrity in Mindfulness-Based Programs," in which the authors take up the challenges attending to such programs and also offer suggestions for safeguarding the integrity of the wider field. An invaluable addition to the body of research and therapy-oriented work around the use of mindfulness to enhance life, this volume is a requisite for students and practitioners in psychology, social work, psychiatry, and related disciplines, and for any reader seeking a solid overview of the conceptual and practical terrain of mindfulness. Summing Up: Essential. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty; professionals; general readers. --Michael Uebel, University of Texas
