CHOICE Review

This electronic edition of DSM-IV, as noted in this welcome message, "contains every word from the DSM-IV [book]." DSM-IV is the fourth edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (1994), a work considered by many as the "bible" for students and professionals in psychiatry. It provides a nomenclature of mental disorders that fosters communication among clinicians and researchers. The manual is also an important reference tool for other professionals in health-related fields such as counseling, social work, and nursing. Three versions of the electronic DSM-IV are available: MS-DOS, Windows, and Macintosh. The version reviewed here was the Windows version. Installation is simple and the instructions are clear. Searching is also easy. If the search is to include the entire book, the user needs to click on the "All Chapters" icon. The user can also choose to include only specific chapters by clicking the mouse on selected chapters. Search precision can be specified by choosing from five levels: (1) matching any one term in the search string; (2) matching all search terms in any order; (3) all search terms appear in the text within ten words of each other; (4) all search terms appear in the text within five words of each other; and (5) all search terms are adjacent to each other. Searches can be conducted in either one of the two modes: match summary and smart match. "Match summary" search retrieves all documents in the specified chapters that match the search string in accordance with the selected precision level. On the other hand, the "smart match" method computes a relevance index for each retrieved document and displays only a maximum of 20 documents in decreasing order of relevance. Both search methods allow the user to view the full text of retrieved documents. All retrieved documents are cross-referenced, and cross-referenced documents can in turn be retrieved just by clicking on them. Overall, the electronic DSM-IV is a very user-friendly program. On-line help seems sufficient for all practical purposes. All retrieved documents can be saved as external files to be later used and edited in a word processor. Also, one may find the "sticky notes" feature to be particularly useful, for it allows personal annotation of a retrieved document. Highly recommended to graduate students, faculty, researchers, and professionals who use DSM-IV frequently. H. K. Luk; Indiana University
