CHOICE Review

Atkins (University of Oxford), author of the well-known Physical Chemistry, (3rd ed, 1986; 1st ed., CH, Sep'78) and Molecular Quantum Mechanics (2nd ed., CH, Jan'84) among others, has finally updated this short reference work (1st ed., CH, Apr'75) on quantum concepts; this new edition should be a most valuable reference for science educators or students from the secondary level through undergraduate college level and possibly into the graduate level. Explanations use a minimum of mathematics but avoid oversimplification without becoming incomprehensible. Excellent figures are used to illustrate concepts where such visual material is needed. The main topics are presented in alphabetical order throughout the volume, and subjects that are "buried" in these main topics are accessible through an excellent index. Each section contains references for further reading and there is a bibliography at the end of this new edition that contains references with dates as recent as 1991.-P. R. Douville, Central Connecticut State University
