CHOICE Review

What a wonderfully exciting, eminently readable collection of essays for the period 400-1200 CE! Essentially these are papers from a 1995 conference held at University College, Cork. Although the title sounds local, the contents are universally appealing. Everything--from "Roman" Ireland, porridge and woodlands, watermills (a particularly fascinating essay), the impact of romantic nationalism on archaeological interpretation, contentious contemporary theoretical constructs, and much more--is explored. One intriguing common thread is a stimulating critique of present archaeological practice: how to select appropriate sites in an era when university and learned society excavations have declined and much actual trowel work is conducted by contract archaeology in hasty advance of commercial building. In many ways, Ireland's early medieval period has been overshadowed by the glories of its prehistoric wonders of fantastic gold artifacts and monumental stone construction. This book begins to redress that imbalance. Nancy Edwards is a major contributor to the conference and the volume; her The Archaeology of Medieval Ireland (CH, Apr'91) remains the best treatment of the whole island in these formative centuries. All libraries interested in archaeology and anyone who just enjoys a good mind-stretching read should acquire Early Medieval Munster. Upper-division undergraduates and above. E. J.
