Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

The principles of the semantic data modelling are described here in depth and this is followed by a description of the application of object-oriented techniques in this area. Separate chapters are devoted to implementational issues, such as persistence and concurrency.

CHOICE Review

Although the area of relational databases is a popular and mature technology, as indicated by the number of books written on the subject, the combination of object-oriented design principles and database technology is, at present, still an emerging research area in computer science. This book is one of the first to be published in object-oriented database design, which poses some new problems in data modeling, query processing, and implementation. The book begins with the semantics of data modeling, the principles of object-oriented systems, and data modeling; concepts of classes and inheritance, query processing, persistence, concurrency, etc. are also covered. The last half of the book deals with implementation issues, with a look at knowledge bases. The material is well written; an extensive reference list to the latest technical works is also included. Written for upper-division undergraduates or first-year graduates; alternatively, useful as a reference for scientists and practitioners in the field.-J. Y. Cheung, University of Oklahoma
