Library Journal Review

This sourcebook has something for everyone. For the novice it is a history of typography and printing technology, a primer on design considerationstheoretical and practicaland a catalog of nearly 100 pages of type specimens. The advanced student of typography and graphic design will appreciate particularly the authors' discussion of legibility factors and of the essential relationship of form to communication. Six case studies, including the design of the NASA logo and the redesign of the Minneapolis Tribune, illustrate specific visual possibilities. Twenty-three assignments given by typographic design educators explore contemporary design problems. Finally, the stunning layout and the range of material presented clearly and concisely in text, captions, illustrations, and glossary should appeal to a wide audience. Ann Copeland, Drew Univ.
