"My work explores light and colour and its relationship to the mechanics of perception. Recently, I have been interested in colour perception syndromes such as scotopic sensitivity and Irlen s Syndrome, disorders where there is a problem with the brain's ability to process visual information. These disorders cause warped colour realities and spatial perception issues which has led me to investigate how colour and light control our planes of vision. My interest in these conditions is in examining how light and colour construct and deconstruct dimensions. I photograph a projected lighting gel set-up into a space and I interpret the difficulties in perception such as spatial awareness issues, making 2D photographic works of a 3D scene which is a reflection of the disorder, i.e. the scene is flattened through the photographic process, comprehension of depth is compromised. Through investigating the cognitive functions of visual optics, these 2D works therefore question how we perceive dimensional space through light and colour. In generating this work I hope to create a greater understanding of how we individually process light and colour in our environment" - artists statement.
