CHOICE Review

In addition to a group-by-group discussion of the chemistry of the main group elements, with generally very clear theoretical interpretations, and excellent structural diagrams, this book contains a concise introductory chapter containing an assortment of useful ideas and principles; a chapter on the quantum theory underlying periodicity; a substantial chapter on bioinorganic chemistry which, despite the book's title, devotes 20 pages to transition metals; and a good appendix showing crystal structure models, with practical instructions on building them. The bibliography is erratic; some chapters have general readings, which are current, and concentrate on reviews and textbooks; other chapters have no specified readings. While this is a well-written and clear survey of main group chemistry at a level that can be understood by advanced undergraduates, for libraries that already have N. N. Greenwood and A. Earnshaw's The Chemistry of the Elements (CH, Nov'84) or F. A. Cotton and G. Wilkinson's Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (5th ed., 1988; 3rd ed., CH, Jan'73), this book will not be an essential acquisition.
